Cranky Old Man

5 comments:

When an old man died in the geriatric ward of a nursing home in an Australian country town, it was believed that he had nothing left of any value.

Later, when the nurses were going through his meager possessions, They found this poem. Its quality and content so impressed the staff that copies were made and distributed to every nurse in the hospital.

One nurse took her copy to Melbourne. The old man's sole bequest to posterity has since appeared in the Christmas editions of magazines around the country and appearing in mags for Mental Health. A slide presentation has also been made based on his simple, but eloquent, poem.

And this old man, with nothing left to give to the world, is now the author of this 'anonymous' poem winging across the Internet.

Cranky Old Man

What do you see nurses?........What do you see?
What are you thinking..............when you're looking at me?
A cranky old man....................not very wise,
Uncertain of habit....................with faraway eyes?
Who dribbles his food..............and makes no reply.
When you say in a loud voice...'I do wish you'd try!'
Who seems not to notice..........the things that you do.
And forever is losing................a sock or shoe?
Who, resisting or not................lets you do as you will,
With bathing and feeding..........the long day to fill?
Is that what you're thinking?.....Is that what you see?
Then open your eyes, nurse.....you're not looking at me.
I'll tell you who I am.................as I sit here so still,
As I do at your bidding.............as I eat at your will.
I'm a small child of ten.............with a father and mother,
Brothers and sisters................who love one another
A young boy of sixteen............with wings on his feet
Dreaming that soon now...........a lover he'll meet.
A groom soon at twenty...........my heart gives a leap.
Remembering, the vows...........that I promised to keep.
At twenty-five, now..................I have young of my own.
Who need me to guide.............and a secure happy home.
A man of thirty........................my young now grown fast,
Bound to each other................with ties that should last.
At forty, my young sons...........have grown and are gone,
But my woman is beside me....to see I don't mourn.
At fifty, once more...................babies play 'round my knee,
Again, we know children...........my loved one and me.
Dark days are upon me............my wife is now dead.
I look at the future....................I shudder with dread.
For my young are all rearing......young of their own.
And I think of the years.............and the love that I've known.
I'm now an old man...................and nature is cruel.
It's jest to make old age.............look like a fool.
The body, it crumbles................grace and vigour, depart.
There is now a stone..................where I once had a heart.
But inside this old carcass.........a young man still dwells,
And now and again....................my battered heart swells
I remember the joys...................I remember the pain.
And I'm loving and living..........life over again.
I think of the years, all too few..gone too fast.
And accept the stark fact...........that nothing can last.
So open your eyes, people.........open and see.
Not a cranky old man.................look closer
See..............................................ME!!

Remember this poem when you next meet an older person who you might brush aside without looking at the young soul within. We will all, one day, be there, too!

The best and most beautiful things of this world can't be seen or touched. They must be felt by the heart!

My Bio and Graphic :)

2 comments:
For some reason my bio and graphic wouldn't make it through to Jadefireeyes, so I'm having to put it in a post :( So here it is!

                                                                      Charli

Hi, I’m Charlotte, but in the online world I’m Charli. I'm a mature 12-year-old bookworm with a tendency to put a foot in my mouth. I'm a Potterhead, Heartbeat and Scout. My hobbies include reading, writing, swimming, photography and listening to music. My favourite authors are Cathy Hopkins, Cathy Cassidy and Sophie McKenzie, and my favourite band is The Script. My favourite colour is purple, and my favourite food is pizza!  I blog over at rosesunglasses.blogspot.com, and I also run a reading campaign, Just 1 Page, through it to. I want to be a politician when I grow up. You can email me at rosetintedsunglasses@hotmail.co.uk. Bye for now! Charli xx

(By the way, this says I'm 12 as it is only 4 days till I'm 12 so I figured it would be easier for Jade to just say I'm 12.)

Photography: My Beloved Stuffed Animals :)

No comments:
I had a photo shot with some of my sweet stuffed animals. It was really fun; I got to position them and retrieve pretty props just like a real model photographer! I hope you like them as much as I do in real life!

I'll also give you their names:

Roxy

Garnet

Amethyst

Queen Vittoria

Bellatrix and Annabeth

Rose and Shade

Sam has a special story. I made him along with many little kids at the library. We got them in a little package, and stuffed them using the cotton in two separate boxes. (When they laid the giant mound on the table, I wanted to lay down in it and sleep.) Then we put a little wooden heart in them, zipped them up, and customized them with clothes. He is my favorite because he is my most recent, and I made him.

Storm and her baby.

A Little Poem

2 comments:
As the ground shakes,
The sun disappears behind the sky wall.
 As the earth moves,
The rain begins to fall.
With the moon bold in motion
And the gathering of storms,
You find your way and
Open the door.
Look: the mist of eloquence.
Your smile thawed my winter heart.
And since we met,
We must now part.

Hi, Everyone, I'm Charli

1 comment:

Hi, everyone, my name's Charli and I'm the newest edition to Blog For Joy.

When I was looking through the post archives on the dashboard, to see what everyone posts about, I noticed that Erin had done an inductory post on herself first. So, I thought I would do that.

I blog over at Life Through Rose-Tinted SunGlasses, or RTSG as I call it for short. Find it here.

Here are a few facts about me.

  • My hobbies include: photography, reading, writing, board and card games, history, politics, some singing, listening to music, and, of course, blogging.
  • My favourite bands/singers are The Script, Florence+The Machine and Coldplay.
  • I have too many favourite authors to list, but my current favourite is Sophie McKenzie.
That's just a few facts about me, but you can find out some more about me on the About The Contributors page when Jadefireeyes puts it on.

I will probably blog about Books the most and some Whimsical Tidbits. Just don't except any poetry from me, I'm rubbish at that.

Thanks for reading, hope to blog soon!

Free Rice

2 comments:
Hi! I recently came across a website, freerice.com, that I wanted to share. It has a bunch of sponsors who have agreed to donate 10 grains of rice to starving people for every correct answer that people get on this website. You can choose what to be quizzed on from zillions of subjects. It's cool because you learn things and donate a lot of rice to charity. And it's actually super fun, too.

This jay bounds through the forest.
The umber-colored earth stirs.
An apple signals unrest.

This house lives in the forest.
The great sycamore log stirs.
An acorn signals unrest.

One Bright Morning

4 comments:
One Bright Morning (A Nonsense Verse)

Ladies and jellybeans, hoboes and tramps,
Cockeyed mosquitoes and bow-legged ants
Admission is free, so pay at the door
Pull up a chair and sit on the floor.
I come before you to stand behind you,
To address you, not undress you.

Ladies and gentlemen, short and stout,
I will tell you a story I know nothing about
A story that can make statues shiver:
Christopher Cucumber sailed the Miss Sloppy River
In his right hand he held the Declaration of Indigestion
In his left, the Starred-Spangled Banana

One bright morning in the middle of the night,
Two dead boys got up to fight.
One was blind and the other couldn't see,
So they chose a dummy for a referee.
Back to back they faced one another,
Drew their swords and shot each other.

A blind man went to see the fair play,
And a dumb man went to shout “Hooray!”
A deaf policeman heard the noise,
And came to arrest those two dead boys.
Now they live in the middle of the block
In an upstairs-downstairs vacant lot.

A paralyzed donkey came walking by,
And kicked the copper in the middle of the eye,
Sent him through a nine-inch wall,
Into a dry ditch and drowned them all.

A long black hearse came to cart him away,
But he ran for his life and is still gone today.
I watched from the corner of a big round table,
I the only eyewitness to the facts of my fable;

If you don't believe this lie is true,
Ask the blind man—he saw it, too.
And through a knothole in a wooden brick wall,
The man with no legs had walked away.

A song that I can't get enough lately.

2 comments:

Am I loud and clear, or am I breaking up?
Am I still your charm, or am I just bad luck?
Are we getting closer, or are we just getting more lost?

I'll show you mine if you show me yours first
Let's compare scars, I'll tell you whose is worse
Let's unwrite these pages and replace them with our own words

We live on front porches and swing life away,
We get by just fine here on minimum wage
If love is a labor I'll slave till the end,
I won't cross these streets until you hold my hand

I've been here so long, I think that it's time to move
The winter's so cold, summer's over too soon
Let's pack our bags and settle down where palm trees grow

I've got some friends, some that I hardly know
But we've had some times, I wouldn't trade for the world
We chase these days down with talks of the places that we will go

We live on front porches and swing life away,
We get by just fine here on minimum wage
If love is a labor I'll slave till the end,
I won't cross these streets until you hold my hand....until you hold my hand

I'll show you mine if you show me yours first
Let's compare scars, I'll tell you whose is worse
Let's unwrite these pages and replace them with our own words

We live on front porches and swing life away,
We get by just fine here on minimum wage
If love is a labor I'll slave till the end,
I won't cross these streets until you hold my hand

Swing life away [x4]

Dabbling with Art

2 comments:
I know some people are incredibly talented at art, while others will swear it's their weakest point. It shouldn't matter whether you are or aren't good at it, It's if you like and enjoy it.
I love drawing, painting, creating or just doodling in my maths copy!
Here's my latest doodle (although it's not from my maths copy just a scrap of paper) and painting:

So what do you think?
Advice and criticism gladly appreciated

Dixit

1 comment:

The boat set out, one cold autumn night, to steal some beauty and bring it back to the dull place the sailors called home. It searched and searched for something perfect enough to put in its treasure chest. Nothing was quite right. Finally a sailor scooped up some water and some moonlight. The boat sailed back to its old jungle home with the treasure in tow. When the sailors looked in the chest they smelled the salt and imagined the sea, and perhaps they could squint and see the ocean and the moonlight, and they remembered their moonlit journey. When they showed it to their friends, however, the box held nothing.

Too Many Beautiful Blogs

3 comments:
Nothing makes me sadder than seeing the long list of beautiful blogs in my dashboard, and not having enough time to read them. Their designs are enchanted, their content is passionate, (their followers many), and I do not have enough time. Is anyone else in the same situation?

Speaking of amazing bloggers, I want to thank each and everyone of you for joining, and if you have gotten the chance, to post. But two months ago I would have still been blogging by myself. I am grateful for that.

(By the way, if you haven't already, please follow Blog for Joy. A blog low in followers means it's a poor blog to many web surfers.)

Thanks you again,

Savvy

No comments:
This book by Ingrid Law is worth a try: Mibs is turning thirteen... normal, right? However, she is also getting her "savvy" that day: a supernatural power that strikes with chaos. Can she survive?

I enjoyed it because it had a unique down to earth feeling to it. Ingrid Law also made the plot come alive under her influence of many rich details. Warning: This book just might make your heart melt.

Time Cat

No comments:
This a book by Lloyd Alexander. If you like witty humor, you should read this adventure of a boy and time-traveling cat! It reminds me just a bit of the Alice books by Lewis Carroll.

Jason learns that his cat, Gareth, is able to talk and has the power to travel to nine different points in world history. Jason convinces Gareth to take him along and their adventures begin

Time Cat is a fantasy novel by Lloyd, an American author of more than forty books. It was his first children's fantasy, and was first published in 1963.

Look to see if your library has it!

Chasing the Sun

I love this song too by "The Wanted". Jadefireeyes

I'm better
So much better now
I see the light, touch the light,
We're together now

I'm better
So much better now
Look to the skies, give me life
We're together now

We've only just begun
Hypnotized by drums
Until forever comes
You'll find us chasing the sun

They said this day wouldn't come
We refused to run
We've only just begun

You'll find us chasing the sun

Oh oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh oh

You'll find us chasing the sun

Oh oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh oh

You'll find us chasing the sun

When Daylight's fading
We're gonna play in the dark
'Til it's golden again
And now it feels so amazing
Can see you coming
And We'll never grow old again
You'll find us chasing the sun

I'm never
I'm never down
Lying here, staring up
And you're looking down

I'm never
I'm never down
Live forever, forever
With you around

We've only just begun
Hypnotized by drums
Until forever comes
You'll find us chasing the sun

They said this day wouldn't come
We refused to run
We've only just begun
You'll find us chasing the sun

[All:]
The sun, the sun, the sun, the sun, the sun
You'll find us chasing the sun

Oh oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh oh

You'll find us chasing the sun

Oh oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh oh

You'll find us chasing the sun

When the Daylight's fading
We're gonna play in the dark
'Til it's golden again

And now it feels so amazing
Can't see it coming
And We'll never grow old again
You'll find us chasing the sun

You'll find us chasing the sun

You'll find us chasing the sun

You'll find us chasing the sun

You'll find us chasing the sun

You'll find us chasing the sun

When the Daylight's fading
We're gonna play in the dark
'Til it's golden again

And now it feels so amazing
Can't see it coming
And We'll never grow old again
You'll find us chasing the sun

Taylor Swift ~ Mean

3 comments:
Hey Guys! I love this song, and wanted to share it with you! It's called Mean, and sung by Taylor Swift, about the bullies that tormented her when she was younger. I love it, as it can give people confidence, and hope that bullies will not be there forever. It sure helped me :)

Here's the video:
And the lyrics:

You, with your words like knives,
And swords and weapons that you use against me.

You, have knocked me off my feet again,
Got me feeling like a nothing.

You, with your voice like nails on a chalk board, calling me out when I'm wounded.

You, picking on the weaker man.

You can take me downnn,
With just one single blowwwwww.

But you don't know,
What you don't know!

Someday, I'll be, living in a big ol' city,
And all you're ever gonna be is mean.
Someday, I'll be, big enough so you can't hit me,
And all you're ever gonna be is mean.

Why you gotta be so mean?

You, with your switching sides,
And your wildfire lies, and your humiliation.

You, have pointed out my flaws again.
As if I don't already see them.

I walk with my head down,
Trying to block you out, cause I'll never impress you.
I just want to feel okay again.

I bet you got pushed arooound,
Somebody made you cold.
But the cycle ends right now.
Because you can't lead me down that road.

And you don't know,
What you don't know.
Someday I'll be living in a big ol' city,
And all you're ever gonna be is mean.
Someday I'll be,
Big enough so you can't hit me.

And all you're ever gonna be is mean.

Why you gotta be so mean?

And I can see you years from now, in a bar,
Talking over a football game.
With that same big loud opinion,
But nobody's listening.

Washed up and ranting about the same old bitter things.
Drunken groans and all about,
How I can't sing.

And all you are is mean.

All you are is mean,
And a liar,
And pathetic,
And alone in life.

And mean, and mean, and mean, and mean!

But someday I'll be living in a big ol' city,
And all you're ever gonna be is mean.
YEAH-EAH!
Someday I'll be big enough so you can't hit me,
And all you're ever gonna be is mean.

Why you gotta be so mean?

Someday I'll be living in a big ol' city,
(Why you gotta be so mean)
And all you're ever gonna be is mean.
(Why you gotta be so mean)
Someday I'll be big enough so you can't hit me,
(Why you gotta be so mean)
And all you're ever gonna be is mean.

Why you gotta be so mean?

Peace out,
Erin x

Lights by Ellie Goulding

No comments:
I love tbis song! Jadefireeyes

I had a way then losing it all on my own
I had a heart then but the queen has been overthrown
And I'm not sleeping now the dark is too hard to beat
And I'm not keeping now the strength I need to push me

You show the lights that stop me turn to stone
You shine It when I'm alone
And so I tell myself that I'll be strong
And dreaming when they're gone

'Cause they're calling, calling, calling me home
Calling, calling, calling home
You show the lights that stop me turn to stone
You shine It when I'm alone

Home

Noises, I play within my head
Touch my own skin and hope that I'm still breathing
And I think back to when my brother and my sister slept
In an unlocked place the only time I feel safe

You show the lights that stop me turn to stone
You shine it when I'm alone
And so I tell myself that I'll be strong
And dreaming when they're gone

'Cause they're calling, calling, calling me home
Calling, calling, calling home
You show the lights that stop me turn to stone
You shine it when I'm alone

Home

Poem: Museum & People

1 comment:
A woman in a green dress is reflected
In the glass of a museum diorama,
Where the savannas are tinged with sunset,
The sky dying,
And where a group of spotted African Wild dogs are perched on a boulder,
Staring into the distance.

In another, pandas are stationed within a blue valley,
The atmosphere evolving above them.
What is reflected?
A girl in a pink skirt hurrying past with a bony mother.

A new diormama;
A fiery dome,
Stubbles of wild grass sweeping into infinity.
The horizon has a bloody accent.
Giant ostriches guard their eggs.
What is reflected?
Boys sitting on red benches.

The gray sea

Forever in all directions.
The gray sky
Is a dome of smudged paper clouds,
Forever in all directions.
This,
Gray, empty Planet Earth,
Has few inhabitants,
Aboard little ships on
The Sea Beneath the Clouds,
Rarely meeting one another,
Floating their ways through endlessness.

Poem: Shells

1 comment:
source
Shells lay washed up on the shore,
Little reminders of the marine creatures they once contained.
Many of them have neat holes bored into them;
They’re probably done by nimble seabirds.
Not the seagulls that fly high above and break the clam to break the shield,
But small salty and feathery apparitions, butterflies of their own right.

Shells are skeletons.
I used to think the shells are a treasure to be buried in a deep hole,
The insides are iridescent as pearls.
Now I know these are sad corpses needing a grave.
Or when you build towers out of them for sand castles,
The stacks are merely catacombs, deserving respect.

Poem: Till the World Ends

No comments:
source
When the world ends
I will sit on the beach watching the tide come in.
I’d build a sand castle for my mother, symbolizing all that ever was,
Is and could have been.
We’d remember fading memories so they might be preserved for tomorrow,
And cry since it’s already too late.
I wish we had been better for each other.

~

The ocean rushes in and out, a live eternal thing.
With so many creations stories of the world beginning from the sea,
Is it not just as possible the world will fall the same way?
Drowned down to its depths, clinging to the sand and being washed away
Like kelp on the shore.

A poem

1 comment:
This is a poem that I wrote recently when I was feeling a bit bored and empty. I'm feeling better now so there isn't any need to worry. Well here it is~

I feel cast off
From the rest of humanity
As I lie in the ocean
With no one coming to see me
Except those with my same blood
It is then that I feel connected
With humanity again
But it is temporary
Because I will always end up back in the ocean
With no one coming to see me
Except those with my same blood

Thin girls don't cry

3 comments:
So this is my first post for Blog for Joy and to start it all, I thought I'd try and provoke some debate. As my bio explains, like many girls, I love fashion and clothes and these days most women are au fait with the latest trends.

For me, a trip to a clothes shop is a great experience, I'm around a U.K size 10/12 and am mostly happy with my shape, but I do feel that fashion, especially top designers, are wary of using women of my size and above for adverts and clothing campaigns. When you walk around a high street store, its unlikely you'll see any size 16 models on the images displayed, although in the U.K a size 16 is now the average size for women.

As time has passed, we've all got bigger, due to diet, lifestyle and the environment around us, and I don't see this as a problem. In an article I read recently it said that women's waists have got bigger over time, and that the trim waists that were seen during the 50's are no more.

Well, to me its simple, women haven't been brought up on a diet based on rationing, I'm lucky enough to live in a world where food is more freely available and where war doesn't affect my daily life. I'm able to have a healthy diet, eat what I like and live how I want to.

To me, fashion is universal and it doesn't matter what size you are, you can still look fabulous in an outfit. I object to the continued use of thin women on billboards and shop fronts to promote new ranges. To me, these women are beautiful, but larger women, shorter women and uniquely styled women are just as fabulous. Give us some variation fashion world!

In short, this is NOT a post which objects to the use of thin models on the catwalk - everyone is unique and some women have willowy figures - this is a post which asks why there can't be some diversity? Personally, I'd like to attend a fashion show where you could see different sized models wear clothes - it would allow the audience to actually understand how an item may look on them.

So whether you're an apple, pear or an hourglass gal, be proud of your body (it's the only one you've got) and remember, regardless of the billboards, or ad campaigns, the clothes aren't just meant for the models.
